The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a residence on Lakeshore Drive in Brimley on Saturday, Sept. 23 at approximately 8 p.m. to back up the Bay Mills Police Department for a disturbance call.

During the investigation, it was discovered that a criminal sexual conduct offense had occurred off the Bay Mills Reservation. Detectives and evidence technicians were then called out to assist the investigation.

Officers discovered several different incidents of sexual assault had occurred over a two-day period. The suspect had driven the victim into the woods on a couple of occasions, which is where the assaults happened.

Investigators were able to locate evidence, as described by the victim, at more than one location. The evidence was then taken to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for DNA testing.

Officers arrested Robert Donald Kelly, 58, of Brimley/Bay Mills on several charges. He was arraigned in 91st District Court on Monday, Sept. 25, on the following charges:

- Two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) first degree

- Two counts of Kidnapping

- Two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) second degree

- Two counts of Assault with Intent to Penetrate

- One count of Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) fourth degree

- Habitual Offender, third degree

Kelly is being held at the Chippewa County Correctional Facility on a $250,000 bond.
