Boaz considering a referendum on Sunday liquor sales

BOAZ, AL (WAFF) - The city of Boaz may be considering a referendum on Sunday alcohol sales.

If approved by the voters, the city of Boaz would become the third city to approve Sunday alcohol sales.

The Boaz City Council is looking to approve a request to allow voters to go to the polls to decide if they want Sunday alcohol sales.

Boaz was the last city to approve alcohol sales at all in the county.

But in the last couple of years both Guntersville and adjoining Albertville have approved going wet on Sunday as well.

Mayor David Dyar said local businesses are pushing for the sales. Dyar said they feel that's what they need to stay competitive against towns like Albertville that have Sunday sales.

Dyar said it's also been a problem recruiting businesses if they don't have it.

"And I've also had some that were interested in locating in the city, but for the simple reason that we don't sell alcohol on Sundays they need to sell alcohol to maximize their profits and to be able to open and survive," said Dyar.

If the council approves the referendum Monday night, it's set to take place August 18.
