Actress and producer Oprah Winfrey will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2018 Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its official selection Wednesday for this life achievement award slated for the 75th annual ceremony on January 7. The choice was revealed by previous recipient Morgan Freeman during NBC’s special hosted by Debra Messing and Eric McCormack. We ran recent polls asking which actress (your choice was Julie Andrews) or which actor (your selection was Tom Hanks) should receive this honor.
Winfrey was nominated as Best Film Supporting Actress at the Globes for her debut in “The Color Purple” (1985). She also was a producer on Best Film Drama nominees “The Great Debaters” (2007) and “Selma” (2014). She received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards at the Academy Awards in 2012 and was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1993.
Meryl Streep received the award at the 2017 event and gave one of the most memorable speeches at any recent ceremony. Before her the three previous honorees were men — Woody Allen (2014), George Clooney (2015), and Denzel Washington (2016).
