Report: Two Midlothian High School brothers, football players transfer after alleging racist behavior by teammates

Two former Midlothian football players have transferred to Waxahachie after alleging several racist incidents, according to a report by Marcus S. Marion in the Midlothian Mirror.

Jerreth and Josh Sterns withdrew from Midlothian on Wednesday. Jerreth -- the older of the two brothers -- said racism drove them out of the school, according to the newspaper.

"I was told, 'I should thank [my teammate's] ancestors because they bred me to be an athlete' by a white [athlete]. My dad had enough of that," Jarreth told the Mirror.

"We have a little cage in our locker room and a different student said they should put all the black people in there and throw bananas at them. I hope they were joking and truly don't feel that way."

Sterns told the Mirror the racism started during his sophomore year, when he became a starter on the varsity football team, but it became much more open this season.

Midlothian ISD Athletic Director Steven Keasler told the newspaper the school began an investigation in September, and it is still ongoing. According to the Mirror, Keasler said the school district didn't have any reports of racism or prejudice since the "original circumstance."

Midlothian coach Doug Wendel declined comment when contacted by the Mirror. Waxahachie coach Jon Kitna confirmed to the newspaper that the brothers transferred because of racially charged comments.

Jerreth was the team's starting quarter this season. In Midlothian's run-heavy offense he threw for 321 yards, ran for 773 yards and accounted for 13 total touchdowns. Josh is a freshman this year and played at the sub-varsity level. The two are brothers with Cibolo Steele safety Caden Sterns, who recently committed to LSU.
