Pathmark and Waldbaum's shut down on the South Shore

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Two more A&P-operated supermarkets on Staten Island have closed following the company's voluntary declaration of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July.

Waldbaum's at 6400 Amboy Rd. in Pleasant Plains and Pathmark at 2730 Arthur Kill Rd. in Rossville shut down on Nov. 26 and Nov 30, respectively.

Both South Shore store closings accompany Waldbaum's at 375 Tompkins Ave. in Rosebank -- each leaving full- and part-time workers scrambling to find new jobs during the holiday season.

"First they said they we're going to be bought by Key Foods," said a former Pathmark employee who requested anonymity, "then [Pathmark] says we don't know anymore.

"And now more than 50 of us have to start looking for work."

In October, A&P originally reported on its website that Key Food was lined up to purchase the Waldbaum's supermarket in Rosebank, but that turned out not to be the case.

A Key Food spokeswoman later said the announcement was "premature," and the sale never happened.

An A&P spokesperson declined to comment on the future of each South Shore supermarket when recently contacted by the Advance.

Calls from regular customers of Richmond County Savings Bank, formerly located inside Pathmark, are being redirected to the Rossville Plaza branch. Similarly, calls to Waldbaum's pharmacy are being rerouted to Walgreens' pharmacy, located at 7001 Amboy Rd., a store pharmacy tech told the Advance.

The July 2015 voluntary bankruptcy of the A&P corporate giant affected about 120 of its stores nationwide, including the company's Pathmark and Food Emporium locations in New York City, in addition to its Waldbaum's supermarkets in the metro area.

The company announced at the time that it intended to "continue strategic sales through the Chapter 11 process," and "close 25 stores in the near-term due to lack of interest and significant ongoing store operating losses."
