One person died when a helicopter crashed into a residential area Sunday afternoon.

Virginia State Police, who are leading the investigation, said the person was killed after the helicopter crashed around 4:42 p.m. in the 1100 block of Settlement Drive and caused a fire within a townhouse structure.

The FAA said only the pilot was on board the R44 helicopter when it crashed.

The deceased victim, as well as other victims, has not been identified, though Virginia State Police said the deceased victim was not the pilot.

A Twitter account operated by the Office of News & Media at the College of William & Mary said there was an “aviation incident” near the school’s Dillard Complex, home to some of its athletic facilities.

Virginia State Police said they, the Williamsburg Police Department, Williamsburg City Fire Department, James City County Fire Department, FAA and NTSB were on scene for search and recovery efforts.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
