As of Dec. 21, a new city ordinance will go into effect in Yuma that will require motor vehicles or trailers carrying any load to be covered.

According to a city news release, any motor vehicle or trailer carrying a load of scrap, debris, landscape trimmings, dirt gravel, rocks, recyclable material or any type of waste product or trash will have to be covered within the city limits.

The City Code does exclude some implements of husbandry, according to the release.

The city wants to prevent any falling, shifting, dropping or leaking, according to the release.

During the first 60 days of the ordinance, tickets will not be issued, but verbal warnings will be given, according to Sgt. Lori Franklin of Yuma Police Department.

Individuals have until Feb. 21 to get the necessary equipment, tarps or coverings.

"Any person or corporation who violates this City Code shall pay a civil penalty of $100 plus any other penalty assessment authorized by law for a first violation in a 12-month period," the release stated. "A conviction of this violation within 12 months shall pay a civil penalty of $250 plus any other penalty assessment authorized by law."
