The heir to the Wrigley's chewing gum fortune has listed his Central Florida ranch for $20million after failing to sell the 1,100-acre property for an ambitious price of $85million 10 years ago.
William Wrigley Jr is selling the Ocala manor with Gary Pohrer of Douglas Elliman, who listed the property with a local real-estate agent, Joan Pletcher. The property is known as Winter Haven Farm and includes three homes, four barns, 52 stalls, storage buildings and a grass racetrack, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Most of the homes are used by the property's staff, though it is thought that a buyer might renovate one of them or build a new home to live in, Pohrer told the Journal.
He also said Wrigley initially wanted to turn the property into an equestrian facility to breed horses for derbys, but decided to sell instead. Ocala, where the property is located, is known as the horse capital of the world and home to one of the biggest horse shows in the US.
'At this point he said he'd rather let someone else bring it to its full potential,' Pohrer explained. Cattle currently live on the property, but they aren't included in the sale.
The reduced price is more similar to other properties in the area. Another well-known equestrian farm nearby, Padua Stables, is also currently on the market for $17.9million.
Wrigley is the former chairman of William Wrigley Jr Co - which he took over after his father died in 1999. He is also CEO of Wrigley Management, which is based in Chicago. The Wrigley Co. was bought by Mars Inc. in 2008.
Heir to the Wrigley chewing gum fortune has put his estate in Central Florida up for sale for the second time
The estate covers 1,100 acres and is referred to as Winter Haven Farm. It is in the town of Ocala, Florida
One of the features on the estate is a grass racecourse. Initially Wrigley intended to turn the property into an equestrian facility to breed horses
William Wrigley Jr is the current owner. He first tried, and failed, to sell the manor for $85million 10 years ago
Photos provided by the real estate agents show expansive stretches of kelly green grass throughout the extensive property
The property also contains three homes, four barns, 52 stalls and a vast number of storage buildings
Most of the homes are currently being used by the property's staff - who live there year around to take care of the estate
It is thought that a buyer might renovate one of the three homes that are currently on the property or build a new one to live in
Wrigley is selling the Ocala manor with Gary Pohrer of Douglas Elliman, who listed the property with a local real-estate agent, Joan Pletcher
The reduced price is more similar to other properties in the area, which is known as the horse capital of the world and home to one of the biggest horse shows in the US
Currently there are no horses on the property, though there are plenty of facilities for them were they to be brought there or bred there
One of the multiple buildings on the property is pictured. It has a huge wrap-around screened porch, which is common for historic southern homes
The property also has hundreds of tall, old oak trees with romantic-looking draping Spanish moss growing in the branches
Though none of the homes are particularly huge or luxurious, it is thought that a new owner could build the home that he or she wanted on the property - which is most noted for its expansive land
The four barns that are currently on the manor are used by workers to maintain the land and raise cattle, which are not included in the sale
Pictured is one of the seven buildings that are currently on the property - which has an extensive amount of land to build other buildings if the new owner wants to
Though there are three homes on the property, Wrigley Jr does not spend much, if any, time living there
