UNC brings back 9 starters from the 2nd worst defense in the ACC, and now they're ranked 20? How does that work?

hmm...I bet most consider the armpit to be Durham..which is pretty much Carolina territory, isn't it? Yes..you will be spending time in the armpit of NC.

Spend the afternoon in the armpit of NC? It's tempting . . . You think it's too late to get a reservation at Hooters?

Oh wait, I just remembered that my Top 20 Heels are playing that day. I'll have to take a rain check on the trip to Billboard Land. But I'm sure I'll get plenty of culture from your neck of the woods in a couple of weeks.

Pirates win big. They're bringing back almost the same team that stuck it to Pat White and WVU (spread offense and even better QB) in Greenville last season.

Well, I've decided to go with the shirtless drunks.

Frankly, weed and scripture carry too much peace and love to compete with Pitt County's finest. And now that they've got the 3 National Championships, their "no respect" just can't hold a candle anymore to the ACC's favorite team to "dodge".

App state (and really any FCS team) don't have the depth of an FBS team, especially a good one like ECU. App will put up a good fight, at least initially but in the end ECU should put them away by at least 2 scores. While I respect App tremendously for what they have built, I have to admit it was hilarious listening to the radio last year when App fans were calling in saying they had a chance against LSU. If you watched that game the LSU DB's played off the recievers in the 1st quarter and just lit them up every time they touched the ball. Lightning doesn't strike twice.

  • PirateMan Aug 28, 2009

I was fortunate enough to attend both App. State and ECU. We also have a place in Boone that allows me to catch a few App. Stat as well as ECU games each year. I have been very proud of what App. State has done over the past few years, but despite all of thier quickness, talent, and experience they will struggle against the Pirates. ECU should be bigger at every position with experienced players that have already celebrated success. If App. comes to Greenville and plays a good, competitive game they should be pleased. Losing to ECU this year will not be anything to be ashamed of.

  • appfan2 Aug 28, 2009

I won't make a prediction other than to say this is gonna be a better game that most Pirate fans think. Everyone thinks that because we lost in the quarter finals last year (largely because we were hit hard by injuries all season), that we don't have the goods anymore. But at least on paper (which is all we have to go by at this point), this could easily be the best App team yet. Much will hinge on whether Edwards plays, but even if he doesn't expect a good game. Heat won't be the factor some think it will. After all we had a noon kickoff at LSU for week 1 last season. Go Apps!

To the person who talked about the gap between the SEC and ACC, I say go look at the results from last year. I will agree that the very top of the SEC is better than the top of the ACC. However, once you shave off the top 2 or 3 teams, the ACC is stronger from the upper middle down to the bottom. The ACC has more depth in quality teams than the SEC. Hence the reason the ACC, as a conference, had a winning record against the SEC last season. C-USA was raped by the Big East yes, but that is also one of the reasons why ECU can now consistently compete for the C-USA title every year. It is a much easier road without the teams that left for the Big East.

Once, again, you make the same mistake you made the first time. You're using one team as your basis for the entire conference. I'm far from a BCS supporter, but to try to put C-USA on the same level as the ACC as a whole is just plain crazy. The BCS however only controls half of the national title which is why we end up with a split title every now and then (USC/LSU a few years back being the most recent.) If ECU manages to run the table, there's a good chance they'll join the list of teams to play in BCS bowls even though their conference has no tie in.

Yes your league suffered and lost 3 of their better teams, but so did the big east and as you pointed out, they were able to recover pretty well. They did so by pulling the teams they wanted from what is perceived to be a lesser league and those teams willingly went along to the bigger money and exposure they get from being a part of the Big East. They haven't been a part of C-USA for a few years now though, so its probably time to move on from that point.

If you line up all 3 conferences from your original post 1-12 and have those teams play each other, I think you'd be surprised how big the gap really is between the leagues as a whole. The top 2 or 3 from C-USA would likely be able to compete pretty well most years in the ACC or even the SEC, but beyond those teams, they would have a hard time.

Also, please let's stay away from blaming the injuries. Few teams in the nation were plagued by injuries the way State was last season. We likely lost a few we wouldn't have due to those injuries, but really, we'll never know. Either way its not like we put a fully healthy starting line up out on the field against ECU and we managed to get by that day.

TO RedIrish: By the way in HEAD to HEAD competition in 2008 the C-USA champion BEAT the ACC champion.

  • rdedrick Aug 15, 2009
    Towel Boy

To RedIrish; C-USA has only existed bout 10 yrs not to mention it was raped by the BE and those teams that came from C-USA to the BE all rank #2 at some point. Second we will never know if C-USA could produce a champion because of the illegal creation of the BCS . Before the loss to NC state we had beat 2 teams better than them, including the ACC champion, in the over time loss to state we had players injured so you win some you loose some . The ACC has lost & had some tight wins over C-USA teams so again yes the ACC is better than C-USA but the gap is closer than ACC people would like to admit .

A couple of quick facts for you rdedrick. First, the ACC had a winning head to head record against the SEC last year including wins over Georgia and Ole Miss (the only team last season to beat Florida). You say no one in the ACC could beat Florida and I suspect you are right. Then again, there were maybe 3 or 4 teams in the entire country even in Florida's league last season, and if they all played a best of 7 series, I'd still put my money on Florida to win against every one of them. To compare conferences though requires more than just looking at the very top, and the ACC was solid from 1-10 last year. ECU won C-USA but still fell for the second straight year to NC State who was a middle of the pack ACC team only after getting hot late in the season. The main difference between the ACC and SEC currently is that the ACC does not have a current national title contender (but they do have 4 past champions and a team that has played for a title). Has C-USA ever had a national title contender?

^ Pay attention Penguin! I commented that I liked ASU after the Michigan upset but then predicted a 24 point Pirate win. The upset took place on September 1st, 2007. By my calculations that game was played about 2 years ago. And when was the last time ECU beat the winningest program in D1 football? And don't hand me the overrated garbage. The Wolverines tradition speaks for itself and they were ranked #5 in the country at the time. Fact is, they took ASU lightly, got upset by a team they should have defeated and they never recovered from that upset. Oh, and the upset took place in the BIG HOUSE & those are the facts. I like the PACK in football, just an fyi.

Like ACC teams are world beaters. There is a bigger gap between the SEC & ACC then between the ACC & C-USA . ECU has a bigger stadium then 3 ACC schools along with wight room, practice field, locker room, meeting rooms that rival ANY PROGRAM in the country, not to mention a AD, Terry Holland, who is national liked & respected. Yes our stadium needs to be up dated but we are expanding it with 7000 more seats and boxes at after 2009 season.

Plus ECU has proven they can beat the best teams in the ACC I don't think any ACC team could beat Florida . ACC fans should not through stones

App lost by nearly two touchdowns to a HORRIBLE NC State team back in 2006. And that was one of their national championship years.

Lol...great....if we were talking about a game within their division, then maybe we would count them as consistent. BUT...since this game is with a team not in their division, you cannot use that argument to show they are consistent.

I'd venture to guess that they were talking about D-1 schools, any of them.

The only way App wins this game is if the game passes by quickly and their starters don't get worn out. Then App has a chance. If depth comes into play, which it probably will, ECU will beat them handily.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm TBK, that one made me laugh a little. NC State has been the model of inconsistency over the last 10-15 years. Think back over that span and name 3 seasons where we haven't lost a game or two that just made you sit back and say "?" while in that same year winning a game or two that we had no business winning.
