EX-Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson wasn’t even considered by Netflix because he “wasn’t worth the money”, according to a senior executive at the streaming service.

Clarkson, 55, and co-stars Richard Hammond, 45, and James May, 52, left the BBC earlier this year after Clarkson was fired for hitting a producer.

They recently signed a “very, very, very expensive” deal rumoured to be as much as £160million with Amazon Prime.

But rivals Netflix have claimed the presenters “sold themselves for way more money” than they are worth.

The company’s chief product officer Neil Hunt said: “We have past episodes of Top Gear, so we have a pretty good gauge of what audiences like.

“Our buying decisions tend to be somewhat data-driven. We have a lot of data to get the deals we want.Clearly it wasn’t worth the money to make the deal.”

Clarkson will be hoping to win a popularity contest tonight – at the TV Choice Awards. The final series of their version of Top Gear is vying for best entertainment show.
