When it comes to taking care of your hair, skin, and nails, having a solid routine in place to ensure the health of all three is key. But sometimes a little boost is needed in the form of a vitamin or supplement. That said, there's minimal evidence suggesting that taking a daily pill or gummy can actually improve the appearance of the hair and skin, and the FDA doesn't regulate supplements for safety or effectiveness before they hit the shelves.

Still, there are certain ingredients you can look for in a product—things like collagen, keratin, and biotin, as well as vitamins A, D, and E—that have some legit, backed-by-science results.

Meet Our Experts: Azza Halim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, Debra Jaliman, MD, a dermatologist in New York City and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine, Dendy Engelman, MD, a dermatologist in New York City, Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale New Haven Hospital, Oma Agbai, MD, a Sacramento-based board-certified dermatologist

And if you're struggling with hair loss and weak nails, you don't have to stock multiple vitamins and supplements. "Haircare and skincare have nutritional similarities," says Dendy Engelman, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. And when it comes to the health of both, one of the most important components is biotin, a water-soluble B vitamin that helps improve the physical infrastructure of keratin. Vitamins A, C, and D are also important, as all three play a role in collagen production, growth, and repair.

Ahead, a few leading dermatologists share with us which types of hair, skin, and nails vitamins are actually worth taking.

Pros
  • Tastes great
  • Packed with keratin, biotin, and vitamin C
Cons
  • Contains sugar

Aside from the fact that it tastes delicious, this vitamin contains keratin, biotin, and vitamin C, all of which are known ingredients for healthy hair, skin, and nail growth. Additionally, it features vitamins A & E, manganese, selenium, and zinc, which, according to dermatologist Dr. Azza Halim, M.D., are "all necessary for collagen production, fat and protein metabolism as well as antioxidant benefits."

Rave review: "These vitamins really helped to improve the overall quality and appearance if skin. My skin felt firmer and more supple. I also noticed a difference in my hair as well."

Pros
  • Contains biotin for stronger hair, skin, and nails
  • Good value
Cons
  • Large pills

You probably recognize this supplement because it’s like the granddaddy of all beauty supplements. “Biotin (a form of vitamin B) is important for the energy production that many enzymes need,” says New York City dermatologist Debra Jaliman, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine. Basically, it helps your body convert the foods you eat into energy more efficiently. In doing so, it helps your hair, skin, and nails grow (a.k.a. fewer brittle nails and split ends). Just be sure to tell your doctor that you're taking it—biotin is known to mess with some lab test results.

Rave review: "The result was AMAZING! Within just a few weeks my hair stopped shedding to a point that I've NEVER seen it! Like... in the shower, combing my conditioner through, I'd get maybe 2-3 strands. That NEVER happened before, even before COVID. My hair is so lush and thick again, and I am so happy about it! I think it's growing faster, too, but I can't be sure."

Pros
  • Helps to fight thinning hair
  • Contains keratin, resveratrol, and vitamin E
Cons
  • May not help with some forms of hair loss

This clinically tested supplement combines biotin with botanicals like vitamin E, ashwagandha, biocurcumin, keratin, and resveratrol to rebalance the stress hormones that can cause hair loss, combat the inflammation that interrupts hair growth, and fight free-radical damage, says New York City dermatologist Dendy Engelman, M.D.

In essence, it both addresses some of the biggest causes of hair loss while making the hair that grows stronger and healthier. However, if you have hair loss because of an active disease or cancer treatment, Nutrafol won't help you there. And you shouldn't take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Rave review: "My main area of concern was thinning hair, especially around my hairline. I have definitely seen a huge improvement. My hairline has filled in completely, I barely have any shedding now, and my hair feels healthier, is less brittle and dry, and has more volume."

Pros
  • Good value
  • Helps with hair growth and health
Cons
  • Smaller amount of capsules

Another supplement that combines biotin with vitamins and minerals, Viviscal looks to iron, vitamin C, niacin, and zinc for clinically tested additions that are shown to support the growth of fuller, shinier hair, as well as stronger nails, says Deanne Mraz Robinson, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale New Haven Hospital. It's a comparable (but more affordable) alternative to Nutrafol and similarly helps promote healthier hair growth.

Rave review: "I have been using this for about 6 months. I started losing a lot of hair due to stress. It works amazingly well. My bald spots have started filling in. I even noticed that my eyebrows are growing in. I have been using this for about 6 months but started to notice the difference in 3 months."

Pros
  • Supports hair, skin, and nails
  • Also contains hylauronic acid
Cons
  • Larger pills to swallow

Alongside nutrients like collagen and keratin, which are essential for the health of hair, skin, and nails, these vitamins also contain hyaluronic acid to promote skin hydration.

Rave review: "After a few weeks my skin is hydrated, and I’ve noticed significantly less shedding when I brush my hair after I shower. I’ve also noticed a bunch of baby hairs growing, and my lashes are longer than ever. Highly recommend these vitamins."

Pros
  • Contains a proven amino acid
  • Helps to build keratin
Cons
  • Works best in combination with another supplement

If you want to fight weakened hair, skin, and nails all at the same time, cystine is your MVP. This amino acid helps build the fibrous protein known as keratin that is crucial to strengthening the structure of all three, says Jaliman.

It’s also unique in that it creates disulfide bonds, which aid in retaining moisture and keeping keratin together (translation: you'll notice less dryness, too). Cystine also helps your body metabolize biotin, meaning it'll be better equipped to convert your food into energy and nutrients.

Rave review: "I had hair loss post-Covid and could not get it to stop. My sister told me to order this and it worked right away."

Pros
  • Stimulates fibroblasts for healthy skin
  • Good for anti-aging benefits
Cons
  • Not ideal for hair and nails

Are your hair, skin, and nails feeling super dry and brittle? Vitamin A can come to the rescue, since cells use this essential vitamin to produce the oil that keeps areas like the scalp and skin moisturized, says Engleman, while also stimulating fibroblasts (skin tissue cells) that help keep the complexion firm and healthy.

Other vitamin A benefits include better vision, a stronger immune system, and reduced risk of heart disease.

Rave review: "All I can say is, 'Wow!' I've been taking this for a week and i can tell a HUGE difference in my skin. I've been struggling with hormonal cystic acne for the past three years and have tried so many regimens. After only a week of taking this, I can notice a huge change in the texture of my skin. My skin feels tighter and brighter."

Pros
  • Helps to repair skin
  • May also stimulate hair growth
Cons
  • Not ideal for strengthening nails

This multivitamin created specifically with women 18 and older in mind was formulated with nine nutrients, including folate (the active form of folic acid, which is known for promoting healthy hair growth), vitamin E (which can repair damaged skin), and vitamin B12 (which can reduce the appearance of dull skin).

Rave review: "I have been taking these for a few months and I love them! They are everything I want in one pill and they don’t taste gross due to the fish oil thanks to the mint flavor. They are also time release so you get more from your pills."

Pros
  • Good value for number of capsules
  • Contains multiple benefits
Cons
  • Not the best choice for skin boosting

This rejuvenating multivitamin includes vitamins A, C, E, folate, B6, B12, and more, but it also contains organic sulfur. "Organic sulfur provides the body with natural building blocks for healthy hair growth," Sacramento-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Oma Agbai, M.D. says.

Rave review: "All I can tell is that within two weeks of taking Maxi Hair, I saw a definite, striking change in my hair loss. I have very few hair in my tub after shampooing and barely any hair on the floor after brushing. I don't see yet much difference in the thickness of my hair but again it has been a month so the new hair is still short."

Pros
  • Vegan
  • Small and easy to swallow
Cons
  • Slight aftertaste

It may be vegan, but that doesn't effect efficacy at all. These all-natural capsules contain more than 1,000 times the daily recommended value of biotin. Why is that so great for your hair, skin, and nails? Biotin boosts keratin production—vital for health and growth, says Manish Shah, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Denver.

Rave review: "I have tried at least 5 brands of hair vitamins. None worked as well as Shedavi! I get my hair cut every 6 weeks and this last time I went my hairdresser could not believe how much my hair had grown and she said it felt thicker. So that was enough for me; I ordered my second bottle."

Pros
  • Great for overall wellness
  • Doctor-developed
Cons
  • Expensive

Dr. Daniel Yadegar developed this supplement in response to his sister's struggle with hair loss, skin issues, and weak nails. The unique combination of betaine HCL, saw palmetto, MSM, and biotin is specially designed to enhance collagen production to both thicken and strengthen hair and nails. The vegan and cruelty-free formula also works hard to balance hormones.

Rave review: "I started taking this after I went from blonde back to my natural brunette color. It's been 3 months and my hair is healthier than ever, less breakage and shedding and super shiny! The first thing I noticed within 2 weeks were my nails, they grew like crazy and became so hard! My nails have never been this strong!"
