DUI Mom Had Kids In Car For High-Speed Chase: Cops

The children, ages 8 and 5, were not in car seats or wearing seat belts, Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office deputies say.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A woman arrested for DUI after leading sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase had her two young children unrestrained in the car at the time, authorities say.

Amber Martin, 30, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with driving under the influence of drugs, among other charges.

According to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, a deputy spotted Martin driving her Infiniti at about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday on Beaver Ruin Road near the Interstate 85 ramp. The deputy reportedly saw her abruptly change lanes "in an unsafe manner" and activated his blue lights.

According to the sheriff's office, Martin refused to stop and lead deputies on a high-speed chase that lasted six minutes. Eventually, a deputy used a PIT maneuver to make Martin's car spin out, bringing it to a stop. No one was injured, but Martin's car hit a Gwinnett Police car involved in the chase, the sheriff's office said.

When she got out, law enforcement officers realized the two children — ages 8 and 5 — were in the car. They were taken to a nearby children's hospital, where they were found to not have any injuries, and were released to their stepfather.

Deputies say Martin appeared to be under the influence of drugs and that drugs were found in her car. She is charged with DUI, attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, three counts of violating the state's controlled substances act and two counts of endangering a child.

She was taken to Gwinnett County Jail.

"We appreciate our deputies’ great commitment to public safety," Sheriff Butch Conway said in a news release. "We’re grateful that their expert management of this incident resulted in a safe conclusion."
