North Carolina teacher accused of traveling to Virginia to have sex with 13-year-old

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Virginia -- A North Carolina teacher is facing four felony counts after authorities say she arranged to meet a 13-year-old former student in Virginia in order to have sex.

Kathleen Capitano, 24, of Shallotte, N.C., had met the boy in 2015 while she was a student teacher at an elementary school in Herndon, Virginia, USA Today reports.

Capitano is charged with four counts of use of communication systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children under 15 years of age, according to the Washington Post.

The Post reports investigators were made aware of Capitano's online activity and met with the 13-year-old and his parents before she arrived.

Authorities took Capitano into custody last Saturday when she arrived a hotel in Herndon.

A spokesperson for the school district in Brunswick, N.C., says Capitano, a middle-school math teacher, has been placed on paid leave.

Capitano could face additional charges, reports say.
