Worker Dies In Fall At Hudson Yards Construction Site, Police Say

This is the second construction worker to died at the site since June.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — A construction worked died and another was injured at a Hudson Yards area construction site on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting two injured workers at about 2 p.m. on Thursday. One, a 45-year-old man, was found dead at the scene. The second man, also 45, was taken to a hospital with head and other injuries, police said. Neither worker has been identified.

Police did not immediately have details on how the men were injured. Tishman Construction, the lead construction company at the site, said that the workers fell out of a lift while it was descending. The company did not provide additional details on how the fall happened.

Both men were construction workers in the Hudson Yards area, the site of a massive new development coming to Midtown Manhattan. The men were working at 400 W 33rd St., the site of the future 1 Manhattan West, a skyscraper that is expected to stand 67 stories tall once it's completed. This is the second time a construction worker has died while working at the site.

In June, a construction worker fell 10 stories to his death at 1 Manhattan West, according to authorities and city records. At the time, city inspectors faulted the site for "site conditions endangering workers," according to city records. Authorities say that Roger Vail, the 62-year-old who died in June, "was allowed in an area which presented a fall hazard" without being given a life line and harness, "resulting in death."

"One worker died on-site and the other is at the hospital," a Tishman Construction spokesman said in a statementt. "We are deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy and we are actively cooperating with all relevant agencies to investigate the matter. There are no further details at this time."

The building is one of six being built by Brookfield Properties to create an eight-acre project that will cost as estimated $4.5 billion. Manhattan West, as Brookfield's development is known, is being built between Tenth and Ninth avenues. Hudson Yards, a neighboring development project, is being constructed by the company Related between the West Side Highway and Tenth Avenue.

The fatality in the Hudson Yards area comes just hours after a difference construction worker died in a 29-story fall from a luxury condo building going up near South Street Seaport.
