Black Ops 2 multiplayer will be free-to-play on Steam this weekend, it has been announced.

Fans can download and play the game's multiplayer component for free until Sunday, May 12 at 1pm (GMT).

Users will also benefit from a 33% discount on the game and the Digital Deluxe Edition, which are available for £26.79 and £36.84 respectively.

The free-to-play promotion coincides with a double-XP weekend on Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U. Players can earn extra experience points until Monday, May 13 at 6pm (GMT).

Call of Duty: Ghosts, the next entry in the popular first-person shooter series, was announced by Activision earlier this month.

It will take place in an all-new Call of Duty world, with a new story and characters.

The single-player campaign is said to include more destructible environments, with multiplayer maps featuring interactive areas and traps.

The game will be demonstrated live at the next-generation Xbox unveiling on May 21.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released on current and next-generation systems on November 5.
