Fellow inmates built the custom-made frame so he could get a good night’s kip at Shotts nick.

In their latest report on the Lanarkshire jail, inspectors praised bosses for helping out the tall con.

But they also slammed the quality of bedding dished out to offenders.

David Strang, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland, wrote: “The quality of mattresses and pillows should be reviewed as they were very thin and required replacement.

“We came across a taller prisoner who had a longer bed made for him in the workshop. This constituted an area of good practice, however, it appeared to be a one-off.”

Inspectors blasted Low Moss jail in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, for the state of its mattresses and pillows following a visit earlier this year.

Governors were told to order comfier bedding for lags. The Scottish Prison Service said it would “carefully consider” the report’s recommendations.
