A Rowan County student was arrested after found with a gun at school.
On Wednesday, Nov. 14, at about lunchtime, staff from Nazareth Children’s Home contacted Sgt. Scott Flowers of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office with a concern that one of their students may possess a firearm at East Rowan High School. The information had come to the Nazareth staff from Wilkes County, and once contacted they immediately notified Flowers and East Rowan.
There were three students that the staff determined needed to be questioned at East Rowan, and after a period of investigation the handgun was in fact located in student’s book bag.
The weapon, which was a Smith and Wesson .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, was located in the book bag of student Donald Marion Maness. Maness was placed under arrest for the charge of firearm on educational property and was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.

Further investigation was able to determine that the handgun was stolen from a pick-up truck that was parked at 1212 Bird Dog Trail in Rockwell. The theft occurred sometime after midnight Monday, Nov. 12.
These incidents are still part of an ongoing investigation.
