ARCADIA, Fla. – Ryan McEwen, 21, left his home early Sunday morning to pick up his older brother near his home in Arcadia. While he was driving, another car slammed into his vehicle. McEwen’s car was flown into a ditch on SR 70 near NW Pine Level Street. According to the crash report, McEwen died on the scene. The other driver ran away from the scene and left behind his vehicle that caught on fire. McEwen’s family members said he worked at a nursing home. They said he loved helping others.  “He always smiled even when he was mad he was smiling,” said Kristi Stilwell, McEwen’s mom. McEwen’s father said he would feel differently if the other driver stayed on the scene and called for help, but instead he left his son alone. “Maybe Ryan would still be here today, but he ran that’s the only thing he ran,” said James Veasley, McEwen’s dad. Florida Highway Patrol troopers found the driver at his home shortly after the crash. They did not arrest him and have not released his name. Troopers said the crash is still being investigated and charges for the driver are pending. As McEwen’s family members plan his funeral, the community is now coming together to show support. This Saturday, O’Reilly Auto Parts in Arcadia will be hosting a fundraiser car wash. Next weekend, Hambone’s Better BBQ in Arcadia will be holding a benefit barbecue on Sunday.
