Week 4 5th Quarter Team of the Week goes to the WCHS Vikings

CERRO GORDO, NC (WWAY SPORTS) – The 2018 season started off right where West Columbus High School Football ended last year with another loss. However, this past week they went on the road and they knew there was an opportunity. Now for the first time in nearly three years, the Vikings are on a win streak.

They’re our 5th Quarter team of the week.

“It felt good and with we not having a win in two years it felt really good,” said senior running back and team captain Nigel Cessay.

It’s been a long time since team of the week came to Cerro Gordo. The Vikings have not won a football game since November of 2015. However, 26 six losses later, they finally got the win.

“I was really thrilled for the players,” said coach James Pierce. “It was like a huge relief for them as well and for our seniors who have battled the last two years and came close a couple times to getting a win, but I was really excited for them.”

That last was each time the Vikings squared off against in cross county rival East.
This past week the Vikings blanked Creek Bridge in Marion South Carolina 27 to 0.
Some key plays coming from Tayvon Tyler who took an interception back the other way for six. Senior quarterback Shawn Tyson had a pretty good night as well.

“This year is the year and if, if it’s not now than it’s never and I have to go harder than ever before,” said Tyson.

For Tyson there’s still more he thinks this team can prove.

“One down and nine to go.”

That’s what coach Pierce wants out of this team.

“Know what it feels like and if you want to feel that again let’s get back to work and get after it.”

Coming into the season, the Vikings were after that first win, but now they have their eyes on an even bigger prize.

“We’re just going to take it one week at a time, one game at a time, then hopefully November rolls around and we’re going to the playoffs,” said Pierce. “That’s our ultimate goal.”

The vikings begin conference play this week. They’ll head to Rowland with another favorable match-up against South Robeson. If they squeeze a win out of this game that will be the first time they’ve gone back to back since 2014.
