A student survivor of the mass shooting in Texas said she was not surprised when gunfire erupted inside of Santa Fe High School.
“It’s been happening everywhere,” 17-year-old Paige Curry told ABC 13 following the Friday morning tragedy.
“I always kind of felt like eventually it was going to happen here too.”
Curry was in a theatre class when 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis opened fire in a nearby art classroom, killing 10 people and injuring 10 others.
“I heard four maybe five shots. I didn’t know what they were at first, but then I started hearing screaming,” she recalled in an interview with KPRC. “So I got up and I ran.”
Her teacher hid Curry and the rest of the class behind the stage, where they remained for nearly 30 minutes.
“I wasn’t surprised,” Curry added, “just scared.”
Pagourtzis surrendered to authorities following his deadly rampage and has been jailed on suspicion of capital murder.
The Friday shooting is just the latest tragedy for the state of Texas in recent months.
In November, 26-year-old Patrick Kelly opened fire at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, killing 26 and injuring 20 more. The attack was the deadliest mass shooting in Texas.
The Lone Star state was also gripped with fear in March, when a serial bomber set off five explosions over the course of 19 days. Two people were killed in the attacks.
