The campaign of U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, who is running for the U.S. Senate, took strong exception Saturday to scathing statements about him made at a rally Friday in Reading.

Campaign press secretary David Jackson said this: “These are the same smear tactics that liberal Democrats have used in Washington to destroy the character of anyone who disagrees with them. The politics of character assassination is unacceptable. Congressman Barletta will continue to unite all Americans behind his campaign to put their interests first.”

Members of Make the Road Action in PA rallied Friday in downtown Reading against Barletta, accusing the Republican of “disenfranchising immigrants, women, people of color and the LGBT community” among other things.

The Luzerne County Republican is challenging Democratic Sen. Bob Casey Jr. of Scranton. He has made several campaign stops in Berks.
