'Wonder Woman Sequel Films In Alexandria This Summer (ICYMI)

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The rumors are true: "Wonder Woman 1984," the sequel to last year's hit film, will film in Alexandria, Gov. Ralph Northam, the Virginia Film Office and Warner Bros. Pictures announced Wednesday.

Warner Bros. announced in a press release production will take place in Washington, D.C., Alexandria, the UK, Spain and the Canary Islands. Earlier reports had revealed filming would happen in Alexandria's Landmark Mall, a fitting place for a movie set in the 1980s.

"We are so excited to be using Virginia for a portion of Wonder Woman 1984," said Mark Scoon, executive vice president of physical production for Warner Bros. Pictures, in a statement. "The locations are picture perfect and the State of Virginia and City of Alexandria have been great hosts."

"Wonder Woman 1984" will star Gal Gadot and will take viewers to the 1980s as Wonder Woman faces a new foe: The Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. Last summer's "Wonder Woman" earned $822 million, breaking records in the box office. The film is based on the character appearing in the DC Entertainment comic books created by William Moulton Marston.

The specific filming schedule has not been announced, but production in Alexandria is expected to happen in June and July.

The announcement came after Marinella Hume Casting put out a casting call by for a "feature movie" filming in June and July in the the Alexandria area. The movie is seeking extras that are real firefighters/EMT personnel, police officers, men with mustaches, people with rock 'n roll inspired looks and pedestrians.

In the past numerous films and TV shows have filmed in Alexandria, including "Jackie" starring Natalie Portman and "J. Edgar" starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The "Woman Woman" filming could receive a financial incentive from the state, depending on the number of Virginia workers hired, goods and services purchased and other deliverables.

"We are delighted to welcome the Wonder Woman team to Virginia," said Northam. "We are confident that this trailblazing project will find a perfect home in Alexandria, and look forward to the super impact it will have on our economy and the continued growth of Virginia's lucrative production industry."
The 'Wonder Woman' sequel is scheduled to open in theaters Nov. 1, 2019.
