Katy Perry Hits American Idol ’s Disney Night Dressed as Little Mermaid Villain Ursula

Katy Perry took fans under the sea on Sunday’s American Idol, dressing up as The Little Mermaid‘s villainous sea witch Ursula to celebrate the ABC singing competition’s Disney-themed night.

The “Firework” songstress, 34, looked to be having the time of her life as she walked the red carpet before the live show, playfully posing with co-judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

Her costume brought the animated character from the 1989 beloved film perfectly to life — with a black sequin pantsuit used as the base of Ursula’s protruding octopus tentacles (which Perry manipulated with fishing wire, ironically); a purple long-sleeve shirt and face paint giving Perry Ursula’s signature skin color; and an exaggerated gray mohawk wig that mimicked Ursula’s hair.

Accessorizing the look were purple seashell earrings and Ursula’s iconic gold shell necklace (where she carried Ariel’s voice, as fans of the Disney flick remember). Perry also turned up the humor, carrying a shrimp cocktail with her.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Perry has worn a Disney costume for the show.

On last season’s Disney night, Perry dressed as Snow White. Earlier this season, Perry opted for a series of fun, tropical looks with ‘hidden Mickeys’ all over them while filming Idol in Hawaii.

She told PEOPLE on Sunday that she and her go-to costume designer Johnny Wujek had explored a few costume ideas before settling on Ursula.

“I’ve done so many costumes with [Wujek] over my whole career and we were going through what I could be,” Perry explained. “He had a sketch of Piglet, he had a sketch of Sebastian, he had a sketch of [Ariel, the Little Mermaid], Tinkerbell, and Ursula and it was Ursula on keto, you know? And I was like, ‘I think I’ve going to do this.’ “

“Ursula doesn’t always get — it’s hard to dress up as Ursula because she’s an octopus. And so I was just going to go full tilt,” Perry continued. “I mean, a lot of people have been [Ariel] and you would think, you know, that that would be the choice. But Ursula…”

Playing the bad girl didn’t come easy for Perry.

“Actually, to be quite honest, was a little hard playing a villain,” Perry told PEOPLE. “I’m tired!”

“I’m not a good villain!” she added. “I just want to be joyful.”

Richie, 69, agreed. “I was going to say you don’t play a good villain,” he said. “You’re not a good villain. You’re too funny!”

“Those poor unfortunate souls,” Perry said, doing her best Ursula voice while quoting the character’s beloved song of the same name.

Meanwhile, things are still going strong between Perry and Orlando Bloom, who got engaged back in February after years of on-and-off dating

Bloom, 42, was in the audience with his son Flynn on Sunday, wearing a pink sparkly bunny mask for Easter.
