CLEVELAND, Ohio — Ohio State University is the top public school in the state, according to the 2020 U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges list.

OSU ranked No. 17 among public and colleges universities across the country. It took the No. 54 spot on the U.S. News’ annual ranking of national universities, which include both public and private universities, tying for the spot with Santa Clara University in California and Syracuse University in New York.

The top-ranking Ohio university on the national universities rankings was a private institution: Case Western Reserve University, which ranked No. 40 in a six-way tie.

Miami University took the No. 91 spot, followed in Ohio by the University of Cincinnati at No. 139.

U.S. News ranked almost 1,400 colleges and universities, focusing on academic quality, graduation rates and retention rates. The schools were grouped into four categories:

  • national universities, which offer a full range of undergraduate degrees, masters and doctorate programs
  • regional universities, which offer a broad range of undergraduate degrees, some master’s degrees, but few doctorate degrees
  • national liberal arts colleges, which focus on undergraduate programs and grant more than 50 percent of degrees in the arts and sciences
  • regional colleges, which focus on undergraduate degrees but grant fewer than 50 percent of their degrees in liberal arts disciplines

Among schools placing in the bottom 75 percent of schools, U.S. News made an editorial decision to only display ranking ranges.
