Carson Palmer testing out using gloves to 'tinker with things'

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer surprised many earlier in the week when he practiced with a glove on his left (non-throwing) hand. The only time he had been seen wearing one as a member of the Cardinals was the regular season finale last year when he wore it on his left hand to cover a cut he had.

This time it wasn’t because of an injury. He was just using the preseason as an opportunity to test things out. He didn’t know whether it would be something he does in the future or not.

“I like to kind of tinker with things,” he told reporters Wednesday. “I’ve done it before in the past a number of times on both hands — right and left, or one or the other. Just kind of seeing how I like it. I ended up doing, I think, the last two games last year so I’m just experimenting.”

So why the left hand?

“Just better grip. It’s kind of cheating. Those things are so sticky now. Just better grip on the ball.”

At practice on Wednesday, he continued to mix it up.

What ultimately matters is whether he does it in the regular season. Will it give him an edge? If he thinks it does, he will do it. Wearing gloves worked for Kurt Warner his final seasons in the league. Perhaps it can do something for Palmer, too.
