Mardi Gras: MCA Queen Louise Vass McClure

Louise Vass McClure.JPGLouise and her mother found her coronation gown while shopping for a dress for the Camellia Ball. Her uncle and godfather, Homer Leon McClure, was the “creative force” behind the ensemble. The gown was made of special fabric by Vera Wang in New York, then enhanced in Mobile. “We couldn’t have done it without (Homer),” her father says.

MOBILE, Ala. -- Louise Vass McClure is a child of Carnival.

Her introduction to Mardi Gras began as a toddler sitting on her mother’s lap, watching family members and friends participate in parades and coronations, according to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robison Clarendon McClure Jr.

“I had always watched someone I knew and hoped maybe it would be me in the court someday,” said the 21-year-old junior at the University of Alabama.

Her dream came true this year as she was chosen queen of the Mobile Carnival Association.

In fact, she was planning a trip to Italy this spring until her father said that might not work out. He then gave her the news that she was invited to make her debut at the 57th Camellia Ball and serve as a Carnival monarch.

She didn't hesitate to say yes, she said.

The queen's royal lineage dates back to 1927 when her grandmother, Louise Vass McClelland McClure, was the little Queen of Carnival, which predated the Floral Parade. She reigned with G. Cabell Outlaw, the grandfather of this year's king, Peter Cayce Sherman.

Queen Louise Vass reigned as MCA juvenile queen over the Floral Parade in 2003 with king John Connor Peebles. The queen is using a double moniker since her cousin, Louise Vass McClelland, was Queen of Carnival in 2009.

The queen's father was King Felix III in 1977 and has served as the official and unofficial
design chairman of the Mobile Carnival Association for 30 years. Her uncle, David Cooper, was King of Carnival in 1971, and her cousins, Margaret Folmar Cooper and David Jones Cooper Jr., were also monarchs of Mobile Carnival. Her cousin, Ashleigh Cooper, was a first lady-in-waiting in 1990. Her uncle and godfather, Homer Leon McClure, was a knight in the 1978 court.

The queen and her mother, Rosemarie Knowles McClure, found her coronation gown while shopping for a dress for the Camellia Ball. The dress was made in New York, and they worked
with local shops to embellish it for the coronation.

One challenge was finding the perfect color for the royal robes, her mother said.

"Louise wanted green and Homer wanted blue to accentuate her blue eyes," her dad said. "So they agreed on a blue green."

Homer McClure was the "creative force" behind the design and creation of the queen's royal robes, said Robby McClure. "We couldn't have done it without him."

"He has this vision," Queen Louise Vass said. "He can't explain it, but he can see it. I trust him completely. He knows what I like."

The queen's mother said her daughter has been easy to work with during the dress selection and design of the robes. "There's been no stress. It's been very enjoyable."

The queen's royal duties include attending parties and events with people of all ages and generations.

"It's a major step in maturity," her mother said. "I always liked the girls to know her friends' grandparents."

Queen Louise Vass has no problem getting up in front of a crowd, in part because of her years on stage with dance and cheerleading, her parents said.

"I'm pretty outgoing and I'll reach out to people," the queen said. "This will be so much fun."

Queen Louise Vass' royal attire was created by Homer McClure. The fabric is a blue green, watered silk, with shades of gold forming the background for embroidered panels woven abroad. Silver and gold stones, aurora borealis and marguerite rhinestones frame the cascades of gold and silver motifs which are also heavily embellished with pearls. These jewels surround the border of the queen's robes, which total 18 feet in length. The queen's initials, LVM, were created of pale gold leather embossed with silver and gold brilliants and dominate the center of the train to form a symmetrical center.

Her Majesty's robes feature a heavily beaded copy of the Vass Crest with the words "Cassis Tutissama Virtus," which means "A Metal Helmet Protects Valor," and contrasts with a favorite part of the crest — an ostrich with a horseshoe in its mouth for good fortune. The train is bordered in a "meaningful" mossy green and trimmed in white fur.

Her dress was created from efforts in Mobile and New York. Vera Wang made the dress from special fabric and it was enhanced in Mobile with asymmetrical motifs edged in brilliants and pearls.

The crown and scepter were created by Tonya and Tommy Cain, and Jane and Jim Rhinewalt of Dynasty Collection. The crown is a replica of the Poltimore Tiara made by Garrard in 1872 and is made of Swarovski crystals featuring elegant swirls and arches embracing marquis and Tiffany stones. Pear-shaped crystals adorn the center of the delicate design and continue through the crown. Her scepter follows the design of the crown.

The queen's collar is created of masses of bugle beads formed into crystal leaves with clusters of small lilies, made of small pearls surrounded by brilliants.
