Pugh Earns First Event Win in Lourdes’ Program History

Evan Pugh (Venedocia, Ohio/Spencerville H.S.) won the shot put on Saturday afternoon at the Robert H. Johnson Little Giant Invitational hosted by Wabash held inside of Knowling Fieldhouse in Crawfordsville, Ind., becoming the first Lourdes track and field athlete to win an event title in program history.

Pugh posted a mark of 13.66m, his best toss as a collegian, to win the event, while teammate Corey Pargo (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John’s Jesuit H.S.) finished runner-up in the same event with a throw of 13.47m, also a collegiate best. Joe Gallardo (La Puente, Calif./Saint Paul H.S.) made it three Gray Wolves in the top seven of the 17-athlete field, posting a mark of 11.42m. Pugh also led the way for Lourdes in the weight throw, placing seventh with a mark of 11.61m.

Demetri Carbonell (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin H.S.) notched a fourth place finish for the Gray Wolves in the long jump, posting a leap of 6.06m in the only other field event contested by Lourdes on the afternoon. Carbonell also led the way for the team in the 60m dash, registering a time of 7.48 seconds but failed to qualify for the finals.

Payton Hulsinger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston H.S.) qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles and placed fifth overall, turning in a time of 9.10 seconds in both the preliminary heat and the finals.

Juan Echevarria (Hartford, Conn./Classical Magnet H.S.) finished sixth in a field of 25 runners in the 200m dash with a time of 23.62 seconds while Hulsinger was ninth in the same event finishing in 24.22 seconds. Tyler King (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest H.S.) paced the Gray Wolves in the 400m with a time of 58.30 seconds.

Matt Jutte (Saint Marys, Ohio/Memorial H.S.) led the way for Lourdes in the 3,000m run, finishing in a time of 10:33.31. He also had the team’s fastest time in the mile, crossing the line in 5:03.57.

Lourdes will return to the oval next Saturday, taking part in the Tiffin Dragon Open held in the Heminger Center in Tiffin, Ohio.
