OAKLAND — As part of the Jazz at the Chimes series, vocalist Clairdee will perform in a concert entitled “Something to Live For: A Love Letter to Lena Horne” at 2 p.m. Sunday at Chapel of the Chimes on Piedmont Avenue.

Jazz at the Chimes is a concert series featuring Bay Area musicians and vocalists sponsored by Chapel of the Chimes. The concert series is produced by Mary D’Orazi, who said the mission of the series is to

“honor the individual stories, unique artistry and personal contributions of the jazz artists who are a part of our diverse Bay Area community.”

On Sunday, Clairdee will pay tribute to Lena Horne, the legendary singer, actress, civil rights activist and dancer who died at the age of 92 in 2010. She’ll deliver an artistic expression of songs recorded and performed by Horne from her beginnings in Harlem to Hollywood and beyond.

Clairdee’s rhythm section includes pianist and musical director Ken French, bassist Doug Miller and drummer Jim Zimmerman.

Clairdee has received positive reviews as she’s toured internationally and has performed with artists including Bucky Pizzarelli, Boz Scaggs, Cyrus Chestnut, clarinet virtuoso Ken Peplowsky, and has opened

for the Count Basie Orchestra and the late Etta James.

“My mission is to uplift and inspire through music,” Clairdee said. “I consider myself a soul singer, reaching from the inside out, sharing stories, stirring emotions, helping my listeners feel good.”

The Sunday concert will be followed by a reception where audience members can meet the artists, purchase CDs, and enjoy refreshments.

Organizers of the event recommend arriving early, as there is limited seating.
