As an ECU Alumn, I have come to realize that we are just on the outside looking in. I am OK with that. I believe if you want to join them you have to beat them. Our AD who is an ACC vet, know that we have to be on all of their schedules in all of our sports and we have to win. Especially football, baseball, basketball(we are growing, finally) and soccer. Once this happens on a regular basis, it won't matter that we aren't in the ACC, we will be an in state rival. NCSU first, then we move on to UNC(check), WF, and VA. We have played and beaten Miami. Maybe FSU will be next and then UMB, and BC. It may happen and it may not, but it doesn't change the fact that we the fans and Alumni are the tradition of ECU. A great University.

I can see that Raleigh concentrates on the area teams. They have to do this. But, they give ECU a lot of ink too. Go ECU in your game against MD.

populous school in Nc alum Jery Moore has been up there for years pulling n national titles and winning the Socon. How about somecoverage?

    oasispirate,

I think alot of fans in Raleigh can name players on your team. I say that because there is a 75% chance they go kicked off or were ruled academically ineligible at an ACC school so they packed up and headed to Greenville. Better yet, they were a top recruit that didn't qualify elsewhere and ended up at ECU.

Don't sell us fans short, we have knowledge of the makeup of your team.

Classic Raleigh sports radio moment this morning. Taylor Zarzour projected Josh Jordan to be our QB, well the problem with that is Josh Jordan moved to WR this summer lol.

Our QB is likely going to be former BC starter Dominique Davis, way to go Raleigh sports radio for your in depth knowledge of ECU sports lol.

    I don't think that.

When women's basketball - all sports, actually - were under the auspices of a separate organization, the AAIAW, the major schools just didn't pay much attention to womens' sports. Once they did pay attention (with encouragement from Title IX) the same recruiting advantages those schools (like Carolina, Duke, Notre Dame, etc) have over the Louisiana Techs of the world worked for the women, too. And those schools owed their allegiance to the NCAA.

The NCAA didn't cause it - they were just along for the ride.

I'm not arguing against what you wrote, but why do you think the NCAA being the governing body prevents some schools from having a chance?

That's the way it was when my wife played in high school. In fact, I believe until very recently, they still played it that way in Iowa. By the time my niece played at ECU they had adopted the full court game. In those days, ECU was a top twenty women's team, and the sport wasn't yet governed by the NCAA. The AAIAW was still in charge, and the women's game was dominated by teams like Old Dominion and Louisiana Tech.

Once the NCAA took over, those schools no longer stood a chance in recruiting (for the same reasons they don't in men's sports) If you look at the women's NCAA brackets, you could confuse them for the men's. The same schools tend to be in both.

They still just play those same three sports, don't they? :)

That's interesting. Cross country walking. Reminds me of how they used to play girls' basketball. Three on three on either end of the court, with two separate groups of six girls at each end of the court. When the defensive team rebounded the ball on one end, the ref stopped play, and awarded the ball to that team -- at the other end of the court where they were on offense. It was three on three, on both ends of the court. I guess they thought the "delicate" females couldn't handle full court basketball. Pretty funny!

When my MIL graduated, it was still known as ECTTS. It didn't change to ECTC until about 1921. They played three sports at that time - basketball, tennis and cross country walking. Not sure how you score that last one.

I never said I was there. It was a joke playing off our previous rediculous debate about how a school charging 40k a year for tuition can not afford to update their facilities. So to clarify:

    -I wasn't there.

I think I'll stop predicting anything for Carolina until I hear something about player suspensions (if any) by the NCAA. If somehow their top-4 defenders were not playing this year, it's hard to predict much good for Carolina. Pretty much all they have is defense. Lose that and who knows what will happen.

I haven't changed my opinion. ECU has no chance. Make that little chance (never say never). I was just saying, if they pull off the miracle, they will have won 2 out of the last 3 against Carolina.

It was a jab at Carolina fans, not me changing my opinion about ECU this year.

I could be wrong. Let's just say, conditions aren't favorable for ECU to have a good year this year.

LOL. You hit the nail on the head 4 tarheels! That helped to end Steve Logan's career at ECU. A Duke win usually leads to the opposing coach being fired. A loss to Duke football is a career limiting loss for a coach and major damage to the schools program.

  • 4tarheels Aug 3, 2010

You have to admit that the thought of Duke winning a football game is comical. However, the fact that they actually did it would be horrifying to whoever they beat. Thankfully, it doesn't happen to the Heels but once every 20 years or so.

Believe me, There was no pride in my statement. I simply stated a fact that they play the games because you never know what is going to happen. They aren't decided by guys like you. Thank God! I also stated a fact that if they come in thinking they are going to bowl over us and that we will simply lay down for them, then they are in for a rude awakening. That is what I want them to think. Football is both physical and mental. Yates can be a head case. If we get to him early, then that bodes well for us. Pride does go before the fall is another truth. It is in the book of Proverbs in the Bible.

I laugh because we lost to a team that had not won a game in over two years. It is comical. It would be painful to any team that broke Duke's losing streak. I also watched as the inexperienced Duke fans took 20 minutes to pull the goal posts down. Something that B-Payne bragged about doing with Duhon.

Well at the time it seemed like a pretty harmless joke about the difference b/w the two, I never said the figures were some legitimate accurate figure I'm pretty sure most adults with an IQ over 90 were able to make that connection. I did not take into consideration my audience/how serious you take the internet that was my mistake. I honestly think arguing with you is about as pointless as bragging about being the best football player at Duke so I'm going to leave it at that and make a mental note to just do what everyone else probably already does and disregard anything that your putting up.

What assumption? My assumption that you can read and comprehend what I wrote? You need to turn your nerd rage down and focus for two seconds.

I did not backtrack on anything. I joked that if according to Oasis there was around 25k fans from ECU and 5k from duke (That equals 30k stay with me), and you said the actual attendance was 23,276 then the difference (A-B) would be 6,724 fans. Which I insinuated were probably PIRATE fans that just saw how lame the place was and just left. Once again sorry for flying over your head with that I'll be sure to simply anything to you in the future. I wont even venture to guess how you tried to spin what I put as something dealing with Carolina.

so if they have their own station, wouldn't it be silly for a State fan to complain about the lack of coverage on that station. I see your point, but the Triangle is NC State, UNC, and Duke. That's what this station focuses on.

As to the attendance comment. The last game at Wallace Wade was in a downpour. The previous games at Duke in 2000 a 38-0 drubbing(30,244) and 1994 a 13-10 loss in front over 36k. Those crowds were 4 to 1 pirate fans at least. We were fortunate in 94 to face the best Duke team in 20 years. BTW in that 10 game series only 2 were play n Greenville, both pirate wins.

Yeah I was making a play at the previous argument revolving around the old facilities at Duke. Obviously I need to draw the picture a little clearer for BDF so here goes:

The Joke was that they did in fact have the # of fans that the pirate fan brought up, but 6,724 (OasisPirate figure less your figure for actual attendance) was the number that just saw what a hole it was and left. I guess that was a failed attempt at lightening the conversation. In the future I will keep it simple for he/she/it. Perhaps I should have stuck with the obvious:

Duke sucks at football so fans will not pay to watch them play.

Of course you want UNC to look past ECU! Duh. You think you have to tell anyone that? When they do the "Keys to Victory" on the broadcast, the only thing you'll read next to the UNC icon will be "Don't look past your opponent". That's basically all the sportscasters will say UNC has to do to win the game. "Don't think about Clemson next week, just take care of business this week."

GTF outta here with that "pride" and "arrogant" junk. Save the cliches for C-USA.

No sports commentators around here know anything about any team, ACCEPT Duke, and Carolina BASKETBALL. So when football comes around, they think that they also know things about both football programs. These commentators make some wild assumption that basketball success will transfer to football success. The commentators end up talking up both football programs, and make many false claims about how good carolina and duke are both going to be. This creates the annoying, ignorant bandwagon fan. (more so with carolina than duke) It all goes back to Michael Jordan/Dean Smith. Without those two guys we would get: less successful carolina basketball: which leads to, no annoying band-wagoners, and no ignorant commentators. I dont no why this hasn't happened for Duke. As much as i dislike Duke, they have smarter fans, who dont fall for the media's false claims. The point is: Its not cool to know about ECU, or NC State, or many other teams. It IS cool to sell bandwagon carolina and duke fans false positive information, so that they will continue to listen to your show.
