One dead, mother and son injured in three-vehicle crash

GENESEE TWP, MI -- A mother and son were injured during a three-vehicle crash that left a 35-year-old man dead Friday night in Genesee Township.

Officers with the Genesee Township Police Department were called out around 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 to the 4400 block of North Genesee Road near Roberts Drive for a vehicle accident.

An initial investigation by police has revealed a black Saturn Aura driven by the man was heading south on Genesee Road crossed over the center line and hit two SUVs in the northbound lanes.

The driver of the Aura, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Genesee Township police Chief John Mullaly noted the 17-year-old boy was in the first vehicle that was hit, with his mother in the trailing vehicle. They were heading home from an Eagle Scout meeting.

The mother and son suffered non-life-threatening injuries and both are expected to be OK, Mullaly said.

A portion of North Genesee Road was closed for more than two hours with assistance from township firefighters to allow for police -- including a Michigan State Police traffic crash reconstruction team -- to investigate at the scene.

Mullaly added weather did not play a factor in the crash and police expect to speak with witnesses in the next few days. The incident remains under investigation.
