Lauren Booth , 43, half-sister of Cherie, has given up alcohol and pork, prays five times a day and never leaves home without her hijab.

‘I sat down and felt this shot of spiritual morphine, just absolute bliss and joy,’ she said, talking of her experience in Om.

She added: ‘I always felt that the ummah [Muslim community] is a very loving, peaceful place and I am proud to be a member of it.’

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair was himself a religious convert, announcing that he had turned to Catholicism after leaving 10 Downing Street in 2007.
