Invicta FC 16 winner Jinh Yu Frey wants shot at Ayaka Hamasaki's atomweight title

Jinh Yu Frey edged out a unanimous decision over Herica Tiburcio at Friday’s Invicta FC 16. Frey now has his sights set on the woman who took the atomweight title from Tiburcio at Invicta FC 13, Ayaka Hamasaki.

Hamasaki (13-1) successfully defended the title on Friday’s UFC Fight Pass-streamed event from Trinidad Pavilion at Tropicana Las Vegas, submitting Amber Brown (6-2) in the evening’s main event.

Frey (5-1) winning a unanimous decision over Tiburcio (9-4) looks better on paper than Hamasaki’s split decision win, but she was almost able to put an exclamation point on the victory when she scored a knockdown with only seconds left in Round 2.

“God, I just wish there were 10 more seconds on the clock,” Frey told MMAjunkie following the victory.

Frey made a splash in 2013 with one of the biggest knockouts in WMMA history. The regional scene knockout of Darla Harris went viral and launched Frey into Invicta FC.

After dropping her first bout with the promotion by split decision to Jodie Esquibel, Frey has rattled off three straight wins.

She said that her gameplan, which involved using her height advantage, was key for picking up the victory over the former champion.

“We knew (my length) was going to be one of the big advantages that I had that I had to make sure that I took advantage of,” Frey said. “Having that range and being able to move out of the way quickly. We noticed that she had a tendency to cover up and come in heavy with strikes. My gameplan really was to use my range and move in and out and get my shots.

Now, she’s looking at Hamasaki and the title but is ready for whatever is next.

“I would like that fight,” Frey said. “If that’s not what comes, I’ll be ready for whatever.”
