49ers trade back, take Clelin Ferrell in latest CBS Sports mock draft

It’s not Allen or Bosa, it’s Plan C. There’s always a Plan C.

I’m sure by April, we’ll be sick of hearing about either Ohio State’s Nick Bosa or Kentucky’s Josh Allen going to the 49ers. This mock draft goes in a different direction with Plan C. As you know, there’s always a Plan B and a Plan C.

CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson put together a mock draft where the 49ers made a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, putting the 49ers at seventh and the Jaguars at second. This makes the 49ers miss out on both Bosa and Allen, but they pick up Clemson pass rusher Clelin Ferrell in return. Allen went to the New York Jets at No. 3 for those of you curious.

Here’s what Wilson had to say about the trade and the pick:

Ferrell was one of the stars of the best defensive line in college football, and he finished his junior season with 11.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss. There may be questions about Ferrell’s flexibility compared to the other first-round pass rushers but there’s no denying his Clemson production. In fact, on first downs during the 2018 season, Ferrell ranked among the top-10 players in the country in sacks (5), hurries (12), hits (10), knockdowns (5) and pressures (17).

Ferrell wouldn’t be a bad piece and he had a decent championship game against Alabama last week, but from my point of view, something was missing. It wasn’t a bad night, but it wasn’t a dominating, gotta talk about it after, night like I had hoped.

The 49ers need a pass rusher, they also need a tackle, a guard, a potential wide receiver and some secondary help. Given all their needs, we all know a trade back is a definite possibility. The more I watch Josh Allen tape, the more I like him in the 49ers scheme because he wouldn’t function just as a pass rusher, he’d be doing other things as well making him invaluable in several game situations.

But if the talent difference isn’t that great, Ferrell wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize. How do you like this scenario?
