TOLEDO — Toledo had a lead in the fourth quarter against Adna, but the Pirates stormed ahead with 19 fourth-quarter points to earn a 33-15 win in a Southwest Washington 2B non-divisional football game here on Friday.
Cole Fay had 14 carries for 129 yards and a score to lead the Adna offense, while quarterback Braden Thomas ran for 32 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns and was 3 of 9 passing for 91 yards.
Adna’s defense contained Toledo’s typically-potent rushing attack, with Ethan Buck rushing for 22 yards on nine carries and Colbey Cherrington adding 20 yards on seven runs.
Toledo’s Bryce Marcil was 9 of 21 passing for 107 yards and a score. Cherrington caught four passes for 65 yards.
Thomas ran in two touchdowns in the first quarter, and after Toledo got a scoring run from Duke Schaplow the Pirates led 14-6 after one.
Toledo got a 32-yard field goal from Andreas Malunat, and a Marcil-to-Arceo-Hansen 10-yard touchdown pass, to lead 15-14 after three frames.
Adna, though, regained the lead on a 57-yard run from Cole Fay, who also notched a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown to pad the lead.
With time winding down, Cole Fay intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards to the house to put the game on ice.
Toledo coach Mike Christensen said his team played well, and noted that the Indians have now had the lead in the fourth quarter against No. 1-ranked Adna, No. 3 Napavine and No. 5 Rainier.
“And in each game, we came out on the short end,” Christensen said. “Each week we’re getting better. We improved again but we’ve got to be able to close out games. We’ve got to keep improving, the guys played hard.”
Christensen said he was pleased with the way his team responded after falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter.
Adna (4-0) starts SWW 2B League Mountain Division play by hosting Napavine on Friday and Toledo (1-3) hosts Toutle Lake on Friday to begin River Division play.
Tigers Pull Away From Wahkiakum
NAPAVINE — Wahkiakum gave the Tigers a few early fits, but Napavine scored three straight touchdowns in the second half to pull away and win, 39-20, here Friday in non-divisional SWW 2B League football game.
Wahkiakum passed for 160 yards and got a 2-yard touchdown run from James Anderson that kept the game tied after a quarter.
“Wahkiakum came out and spread us out,” Tiger coach Josh Fay said. “They put the ball up in the air a little more than we thought. They had a good game plan.”
One Mule touchdown was set up by a 58-yard run and another coming on an 85-yard pass to Quentin Nelson, which accounted for nearly half of Wahkiakum’s 304 yards of total offense.
“They did a good job of executing, but we’ve got to do our job better in those situations,” Fay said. “We didn’t do our job well in the first half.”
Dawson Stanley, Laythan Demarest and Draven Riddle all scored rushing touchdown in the second half, helping the Tigers turn a 19-14 halftime lead into a 39-14 advantage.
Stanley finished with 82 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries, while hitting 12 of 24 pass attempts for 135 yards and a touchdown toss to Demarest. Demarest ran for 85 yards on eight carries, with four catches for 53 yards.
Tanner Low, a sophomore, added 70 rushing yards and played well defensively, Fay added.
“I thought our defensive line was consistent,” he added. “They were doing good stuff. We just didn’t give them a lot of help.”
Napavine (3-1) plays at Adna (4-0) on Friday in both teams’ SWW 2B League Mountain Division opener.
Oakville Defeats Wishkah
OAKVILLE — Oakville’s Nathan Boyd rushed for 235 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Acorns to a 62-34 win here on Friday in a non-league football game.
CJ Halloway added 84 yards on the ground with three scores for Oakville.
Oakville (2-1) hosts Washington School for the Deaf on Thursday in a non-league game.
