A cannabis dealer who admitted "I'm going to jail" to police but then continued to sell drugs after being arrested has been put behind bars for three years.

Police searched Carl Buck's house on Quentin Close, Littleover, in June 2020 and found around nine ounces of cannabis, with each ounce worth between £180 and £250.

The court heard how Buck blew an inheritance from his father on drink and drugs.

After being released under investigation after his arrest, the 46-year-old's house was then searched again in October 2020, where police found another two ounces of cannabis and around three ounces of MDMA (Ecstasy) worth £360.

Dawn Pritchard, prosecuting, told Derby Crown Court that Buck was "clearly street dealing, although I would say that these are large amounts".

She also said how Buck spent a vast amount of an inheritance from his father on drink and drugs, which he used regularly throughout lockdown.

Around £1,600 in cash was also seized, which Buck - who had eight previous convictions for similar offences, the last of which came in 2004 - claimed belonged to his son.

Sentencing, Recorder Balraj Bhattia rejected the defence's argument that Buck's lack of recent offending meant there was a chance of rehabilitation, labelling Buck's record as "appalling".

He said: "You are 46 years of age now, you have had a dreadful addiction of alcohol and drugs dating back to when you were a young man.

"Three previous convictions makes it impossible for me to overlook this in terms of your culpability.

"I take the view that these were relatively large amounts of drugs."

Buck pleaded guilty to three counts of possession with intent to supply cannabis and one count of possession of MDMA before the trial, despite originally only pleading guilty to the latter before changing his plea.

He was given a two-year sentence and two three-year sentences for the first three charges, and another six months for possessing MDMA, with the sentences to run concurrently.

Nicola Hunter, defending Buck, acknowledged that "he was consuming an awful lot" and that the defendant "accepts that his behaviour did not stop after perhaps a warning shot from police in June".

However, she said that Buck "welcomes as much help as he can get" as he looked to change his behaviour.
