12 Right Hand Branch Rd, Walhalla, established in 1878, is for sale.

TUCKED away in a tiny town on the edge of the Victorian alps, accessed by a footbridge, Windsor House is in a world of its own.

Established in 1878, the historic brick building harks back to Walhalla’s boom period as a gold mining town.

The property at 12 Right Hand Branch Rd, has just been relisted for sale, with Keith Williams Real Estate Traralgon.

It has an asking price of $990,000.

Keith Williams Real Estate Traralgon agent Kerrie Ford said a visit to Windsor House was like stepping back in time.

“It all starts with the township of Walhalla as soon as you drive in,” she said.

“It has established gardens surrounding it, so it’s quite private. And it’s quite breathtaking standing in front of it.”

The historic property has been restored to its former grandeur.

Ms Ford said entry to the three-level brick building is via a footbridge across a creek.

On the first level, a cellar is carved into the stone mountainside.

“It’s quite unique and a bit surreal at the same time,” she said.

Five guest rooms each have their own charm.

Restored over the years in keeping with its original charm, the building has been classified “A” by the National Trust of Australia.

Victorian Heritage Database document states it was built by a stonemason from Switzerland, who was one of the town’s earliest residents.

It features five guest rooms, and one, The Aberfeldy Suite, comes complete with a quaint addition — a snoring room.

An elegant lounge and dining room, a charming country-style kitchen and garden views are further highlights.

There is also a hosts residence with three bedrooms, an open-plan living and kitchen area, plus a bridge for car access.

There’s even space for noisy sleepers.

The current owners have run the property as a bed and breakfast for more than a decade, Ms Ford said.

“The owners have put so much into developing the gardens,” she said.

“They have absolutely loved their time there.”

Walhalla was one of the last towns to be connected to the state’s electricity grid, in 1998.

Ms Ford said the township had been flourishing in recent times thanks to growing attention as a tourist destination, with plenty of events and sightseeing opportunities on offer.

The property, for sale with the freehold and licensed business, is being offered on a walk-in, walk-out basis.

A footbridge leads across the creek to the property.

Ms Ford said a new owner could take advantage of the area’s tourism appeal, but that at its price point, the property would also make a wonderful escape for city-dwellers wanting a country residence.

“It doesn’t have to be kept on as a B & B — it would be a beautiful property just to live on,” she said.
