The fire started at a home on Huon Creek Road, near Beechworth Road, about 5.45pm on Tuesday.
A clothes dryer caught alight and the neighbour rushed over to help.
Wodonga station officer Andrew Schulz said the man had smelled smoke before leaping into action.
He said it was a timely reminder for people to clean the lint filters on their machines.
