NORMAN – Three current and former University of Oklahoma men's gymnasts qualified for the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships at Saturday's National Qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Rising senior Matt Wenske and junior Gage Dyer registered all-around scores of 79.850 and 79.200, respectively, to finish fourth and seventh and qualify on to U.S. Championships in August in Kansas City, Mo.

2016 Oklahoma alumnus Kanji Oyama had an impressive showing to also qualify for the championships, winning the all-around with an 81.700 tally.

"I'm impressed with the hard work of all of our Sooners, including Kanji's win tonight," said Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams. "Ten current or former OU gymnasts qualified to compete in Kansas City, proud to see they're carrying on the tradition of excellence we strive for here at Oklahoma."

Wenske was strong on floor, putting up the third-best FX score on the night with a 14.050 and the fifth-best total on vault (14.350). Dyer put together a solid showing on floor exercise (14.200), vault (14.150) and high bar (13.100), recording the third- and fifth-best scores on FX and VT.

Oyama recorded the top floor exercise (14.300) of the meet and fourth-best tallies on still rings (13.400) and high bar (13.450).

"The guys did well, they didn't have their best performances but they got the job done today," said Oklahoma assistant coach Josh Yee who was at the U.S. Olympic Training Center for the competition. "Now their focus is on cleaning everything up these next four weeks as they get ready for championships. Kanji started off the meet a little shaky on parallel bars but he had amazing performances the rest of the meet and ended up taking the floor and all-around title."

Dyer, Oyama and Wenske will join seven other current or former Sooners in Kansas City, August 8-10, at the U.S. Championships. Tickets for the meet at the Sprint Center can be found here.
