5-year-old injured in head-on collision on US 96 in Sabine County dies

SABINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A 5-year-old boy who was seriously injured in a fatal head-on collision that occurred on U.S. Highway 96 in Sabine County has died.

Two other people were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about a mile north of Devil's Creek in Sabine County Monday afternoon.

Trooper David Hendry, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said that Charlie Higginbotham died at the Texas Children's Hospital in Houston Wednesday as a result of the injuries he suffered in the wreck.

Scott Morris, 51, and Kandy Nichols, 45, both of Mittie, Louisiana, died in the wreck.

According to a press release, DPS troopers investigated the two-vehicle wreck, and they believe that a 2006 Chevrolet SUV driven by Morris was heading north on Highway 96 when the vehicle hydroplaned and crossed into the southbound lane, where it struck a2017 Ford pickup driven by Sammy Jones, 52, of Wiergate, head on.

Jones and Higginbotham were transported to Jasper Hospital for treatment, and Higginbotham was later transferred to Texas Children's. According to the press release, Jones had unknown injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
