YPSILANTI, MI -- Ypsilanti police are looking for a man they say stole gold coins worth thousands of dollars on Aug. 8.

The theft occurred at Olde Towne Coin and Gold, 24 East Cross St. in Ypsilanti’s Depot Town.

The store manager, Rafael Diaz, said the man was acting “shady as hell” when he asked to look at three gold coins valued near $1,600 each, including a Krugerrand, an American eagle and 2006 buffalo coin.

The suspect gave the clerk $100, left with the coins and said he’d be returning with the remainder of the money for the purchase, Diaz said, but the man never came back.

Surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect. Police released those images on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and are asking anyone with information to call Ypsilanti Police Lt. Brent Yuchasz at 734 482 9847 or call or text the confidential tip line at 734 292 5429.

Krugerrand gold bullion, minted in South Africa since 1967, bears the face of Paul Kruger, the president of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900.
