Road cycling marshal dies in Cape Town

A race marshal died on Monday night, according to Cycling South Africa (CSA), after she was hit by a car during a stage race in Cape Town.

Janine Olivier, a member of the BestMed Road Rangers safety initiative, was directing traffic in order to keep participants safe during the annual Takealot Tour of Good Hope, a prestigious local event which featured elite and professional teams.

While she was performing her duties, an oncoming vehicle lost control and crossed over to Olivier’s side of the road, colliding with the experienced marshal.

“As per all sanctioned race incidents, CSA will collate the information regarding the accident,” the federation said, sending its condolences to Olivier’s loved ones.

“Mrs Olivier’s family, her Road Rangers family, and all the organisers and participants of the Tour of Good Hope are in our thoughts during this difficult time.”
