Tokyo shares close higher on fine start of Japan earnings season

Tokyo shares closed higher Wednesday with market sentiment boosted by the good start of the Japanese earnings season and speculation that the Bank of Japan purchased exchange-traded funds.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 26.59 points, or 0.15 percent, from Tuesday at 17,391.84.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 5.38 points, or 0.39 percent, higher at 1,382.70.

Gainers were led by precision instrument, real estate and food issues.

The day's turnover was around 1,811.4 billion yen (17.36 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
