Brave New World Comics in Newhall is set to host Santa Clarita artist Chris Johnson as he signs copies of his store-exclusive cover of the new “Usagi Yojimbo” comic book.
Brave New World Comics is scheduled to host the signing on Wednesday, June 19, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to officials.
“Usagi Yojimbo” is a comic series created in 1984 by Stan Sakai that chronicles the adventures of rabbit Miyamoto Usagi during the Edo period of Japanese history
“He’s basically a masterless samurai in the past,” Johnson said. “He goes around and has all kinds of different adventures.”
The character has appeared in several series from different publishers and has made guest appearances in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” line of comics, as well as all three of the animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” television shows.
“My introduction to the character was actually in the 1989 Ninja Turtles cartoon,” Johnson said.
This series will mark the first time that the character has been published with IDW Comics — the same publishers currently running the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” comics.
“Any time something like that happens where I get to draw a character I have such a connection with, it’s absolutely amazing,” Johnson said.
Johnson, who has been drawing comics for nearly a decade and even worked at Brave New World Comics for several years, is excited to share the cover he drew exclusively for the shop.
“It’s always good for me,” Johnson said. “Getting to have these interactions with people is valuable to me, I can’t wait to see everybody and sign some comics. It’s always a fun time there.”
