Brother of Philadelphia Eagles DE Derek Barnett killed in hit-and-run: report

David Barnett, the brother of Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett, was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday, according to The Tennessean.

“David Barnett, 33, was killed in a two-vehicle crash reported at 3:25 a.m. near the intersection of Burkitt Road and Whittemore Lane in South Nashville, Metro Nashville police reported,” The Tennessean wrote.

Police charged 47-year-old Felipe Castelblanco with vehicular homicide by intoxication after the head-on collision, according to The Tennessean.

Derek Barnett, 22, had season-ending shoulder surgery in late October and is on injured reserve. Barnett’s final game for the Eagles was their Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers. He played high school football at Tennessee’s Brentwood Academy, which is south of Nashville.

Barnett finished his second season in the NFL with 19 tackles, five tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 15 quarterback pressures and hits. Despite not playing for more than a month, he still ranks tied for fourth on the team in tackles for loss and fifth on the team in quarterback pressures and hits.

He had a couple signature plays this season, including when he sacked Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck on fourth down in Week 3 to preserve an Eagles victory.

The Eagles picked Barnett with the No. 14 overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and he flashed some of the potential that made him the University of Tennessee’s all-time sacks leader with 33. Barnett had 25 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, 32 quarterback pressures and hits, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries in 15 games last season.

Perhaps his most notable moment came in Super Bowl LII when he recovered New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s fumble, forced by defensive end Brandon Graham, to help the Eagles seal their 41-33 victory and first Super Bowl win.
