Whether you know it or not, TikTok has likely influenced at least a few of your purchases in the past couple of years.
Particularly in the beauty world, cult-favorite brands and products came to the forefront (like Dr. Jart's Color Corrector and The Ordinary's Peeling Solution). The latest product to join TikTok fame is one you've likely passed dozens of times at your local drug store—Eucerin's Daily Hydration Sunscreen ($8, Amazon).
As a South Asian woman with a medium skin tone, I'm weary of beauty products that go viral—especially any product with SPF in it, since sunscreens tend to leave a white cast on darker skin tones.
But to my pleasant surprise, most of the reviews I was seeing on TikTok were actually by people of color who were astonished by the lack of a white cast, even when they put on two to three layers of the product. I was still a bit worried about how it would feel on my sensitive, redness-prone skin, but remained cautiously optimistic.
Here are my honest thoughts after testing it for a couple of months:
Eucerin Daily Hydration SPF 30
It didn't irritate my sensitive skin.
I was a bit nervous about putting a body product onto my face. Like most people, the skin on my face is a lot more prone to acne and redness than the rest of my body. Sunscreens in particular can also dry out my already parched skin. But this didn't leave my skin red, dry, or broken out.
Here's the only (very, very important) caveat: I wouldn't put this anywhere near your eyes. I know some people rub their moisturizer into their hands, close their eyes, and then apply it everywhere. If you have sensitive skin or eyes, I would definitely avoid that. Don't make the same mistake I did—I tested a tiny bit of this on my under-eye area one day just to see what would happen. It stung and left the area under my eyes red for a couple of hours.
There was no white cast.
Beauty products on the mass market are notorious for catering to light skin tones exclusively, which is why I loved seeing so many reviews of this SPF done by people of color with medium to dark skin tones. The best part about that is that I could wear it under makeup without a white cast coming through my foundation or concealer.
It's affordable.
As someone who admittedly indulges in pricey sunscreens, I was pleasantly surprised by the price. At $8, you get a really large tube of sunscreen that you can truly wear from your face to your toes.
That makes it a great travel essential if you're trying to pack light, too. I still think I'm going to keep my pricey sunscreens in my rotation because I like the additional skincare benefits they give me, but I like that I can use this one on a daily basis when my skin isn't feeling aggravated or irritable.
But it's not totally unique.
If you really look at the ingredients list on this, it's almost exactly the same as any other drugstore SPF you can pick up. To be totally honest, I'm not truly sure why this SPF in particular gained so much fame over other drugstore brands, but I think it has to do with the fact that the price is low, even for a drugstore brand.
This is a great sunscreen to use if you're looking for an everyday essential, but if you have skin that's acne-prone or oily, it'll likely be a bit too heavy for you. (If so, I recommend this pricier spray.)
Overall, Eucerin's sunscreen is a great item to keep in your beauty arsenal as a product that's sensitive skin-proof, affordable, and doesn't leave a white cast.
