Lake Erie Crushers News Release

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, finished off a three game sweep of the Washington Wild Things on Sunday night with an epic 6-5 win in 13 innings.

Lake Erie had the lead for the majority of the game after scoring a run in the fourth inning off of Wild Things starter Chase Cunningham. An RBI single by Doug Trimble made it 1-0.

Lake Erie starter Micah Beyer pitched well for Lake Erie. The rookie went six innings before allowing an unearned run in the sixth to tie the game. He finished with six strikeouts while allowing just three hits.

Washington took the lead in the seventh when Hector Roa homered off of Branden Nunn, making it 2-1.

The Crushers rallied in the ninth against closer Zack Strecker. Cody Lenahan led the inning off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. The game tying hit came from Dustin Williams who singled into left field.

The Crushers got some help from their defense in the bottom of the ninth. With the winning run on base, former Crusher, Conner Simonetti hit a ball into deep left but Tyler Cowles made a sliding catch to send the game into extras.

In the 11th inning with international rules in affect, Trimble put the Crushers in front with an RBI single. Washington would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning on a single by James Harris.

In the 12th inning, the Crushers took the lead on an RBI single by Cowles who drove in Bryan DeLaRosa. The hit came after Washington had intentionally walked Aaron Hill with two outs.

The Wild Things tied the game again in the home half of the inning when Jordan Edgerton singled in the tying run with two outs.

In the 13th inning, Lenahan began the inning on second and Trimble stepped in to face James Meeker (0-1). Trimble got around on a pitch from Meeker and sent it over the wall in left field to give Lake Erie a 6-4 lead. Trimble finished with three hits and four RBIs.

Washington made it interesting again in the bottom of the 13th inning. Louis Cohen (2-0) allowed a run on a couple of hits before the Crushers went to Seth Lucio. After getting a couple of outs, Lucio issued a walk to load the bases. With Roa at the plate, Lucio struck him out on a fastball to end the game.

With the sweep the Crushers pulled to within a 0.5 game of first place. Lake Erie improves to 29-24 while Washington falls to 30-24. The Crushers are a league-best 19-11 on the road in 2018.

The Crushers begin a four game road series with Evansville on Tuesday with a doubleheader. Game one will start at 5:05 PM.
