Jerry Turner Obituary

XENIA — Jerry O. Turner, 83, of Xenia, Ohio, passed away surrounded by his family on December 13, 2017 at Hospice House in Dayton, Ohio. Jerry was born February 22, 1934 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. He was one of 10 children born into the family of Walter and Martha (Reynolds) Turner, from Elsome Creek. Jerry graduated from Stuart Robinson High School in Blackey, KY then went on to pursue his education earning a two year degree from Lee's Junior College in Jackson, KY. After serving honorably in the US Navy, he then earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Morehead College in Morehead, KY. During his time at Lees College, Jerry met and later married Ruby (Salyer), his wife of 64 years. The pair taught at an elementary school in Breathitt County before moving the family to Xenia, Ohio. He continued his career in education as a math teacher at West Junior High, which later became Warner, from 1961 until he retired in 1986. One of Jerry's greatest joys was the many years he spent on his farm working and raising beef cattle. With his strong hands, he also crafted leatherwork and left his own designs and creations for many to treasure. But above all this, Jerry's greatest pride and biggest accomplishment centered around his family, who love and will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Turner, his daughter, Toni (Jim) Johnson of Sandy Hook, KY, his son Quint (Patty) Turner of Jamestown, OH, his grandchildren Janey (Brian) Johnson Kegley of Burlington, KY, Ruby Jo (Daniel) Johnson Bailey, of Grahn, KY, Luke Patrick Turner, of Yellow Springs, OH, Caitlin Elizabeth Turner, of Bluffton, SC, and Benjamin Quint Turner, of Middleport, OH. Jerry is also survived by his siblings Helen Hampton, of Louisville, KY, Ottis G. Turner, of Shelbyville, KY, Nora Julich, of Brooksville, FL, Nola Nolan, of Canton, NC, and John W. Turner, of Louisville, KY. Jerry was additionally blessed with three great-grandchildren, Molly McKenna Kegley, Gracie Joann Bailey, Gidean Lowe Bailey. Jerry was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church that later became the Memorial United Presbyterian Church in Xenia. Jerry was a private man of character whose main goal in life was to leave behind a legacy of purposeful achievement for future generations to emulate. His guidance as the head of our family will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be held 12 Noon Tuesday, December 19th at Memorial United Presbyterian Church, 343 W. Ankeney Mill Road, Xenia with Pastor Kelley Shin officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM Tuesday until the time of service at the church. Interment to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Bowersville, Ohio. We would like to thank the doctors and staff of Miami Valley Hospital along with Hospice of Dayton for the excellent care they provided. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45420 (hospiceofdayton.org). Online condolences may be made to www.mccolaughfuneralhome.com.
