An Egremont school choir managed to bag a trophy at its first appearance at a popular West Cumbrian festival.

Orgill School won the Irene Mavir Memorial Award in the best small choir section at Workington Musical Festival today.

Seaton junior school won the Taylor Edmondson trophy and Victoria junior school won the Alice Green memorial trophy and the Selm Trophy.

The four-day event, which started on Wednesday, features speech, verse and music sections.

Over 300 children from West Cumbrian school choirs took the stage today.

Margaret McIntyre, festival chairman, said: "It's been an absolutely smashing day. We were a bit worried of how it would go with so many schools taking part, but everything worked like clockwork.

"We've had some excellent singing and the children really enjoyed it. Orgill school had never been to the festival before and they won in the small choir section, which is a new category in the festival.

"All the kids enjoyed the experience of getting on stage and singing."

Solos and duets were also performed in the afternoon.

Tomorrow the festival continues with pianists and the Disney class for under 18s.

Tickets for the performances will be available from the front desk on each day of the festival.
