Police identify drowning victim in jet-ski accident

Allegan County sheriff's divers recovered a Grand Rapids man's body after he drowned in Dumont Lake.

ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI - Police identified a Grand Rapids man as the victim of a jet-ski accident at Dumont Lake.

The body of Gregory Troy Williams was found Sunday, July 15, after a four-hour search.

His son, who was operating the jet ski, survived.

A witness called 911 at 3:42 p.m. to report an accident involving a personal watercraft. The caller said two people were on the jet ski when it flipped after hitting the wake of a boat.

The two tried to swim to a sunken island in the middle of the lake but the operator of the jet ski lost sight of his father and flagged down a boater to help.

The victim went under water and could not be found.

The Allegan County sheriff's Marine Division and its dive team responded and searched for the victim.

At 7:53 p.m., after about four hours of searching, divers found the victim's body in 35 feet of water in the middle of the lake. Rescuers used on-board sonar to search for the victim in an area about 350 yards long and 200-yards wide.

Divers reported zero visibility in the water. Water temperatures varied from 85 degrees at the surface to 41 degrees at the bottom.

Sheriff's deputies said that the victim was not wearing a life jacket.

State law requires everyone on a personal watercraft to wearing a personal-flotation device, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
