Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said in the assembly that 39 people have died so far and six people are still missing due to the rain havoc and landslides in the state. He added that the formation of twin low-pressure areas resulted in the heavy rains that led to the unfortunate disaster. The Chief Minister also paid tributes to those who died in the tragedy.

“The state has been receiving heavy rainfall since October 11. The twin low-pressure areas formed off the coast of Southeast of the Bay of Bengal and off the coast of Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea from October 13 to 17 caused heavy rainfall in some parts of the state,” the CM added.

The rain receded on October 18 and 19. However, necessary precautions are taken by the concerned authorities after IMD issued a warning for heavy rains in the hilly region for the next two to three days from October 20 onwards.

“The water in the dams is released after ensuring the safety of the people. 3851 families have been relocated to 304 relief camps in the state. 217 houses were completely destroyed in the disaster and 1393 houses were partially destroyed,” CM pointed out in the assembly.

The assembly adjourned on Wednesday after paying homage to the victims of rain havoc and landslides. Further, it was also decided to postpone the assembly session for two days considering the rain havoc.
